First Responder, EMT's, and Paramedicswork both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather. They are required to do considerable kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting. These workers risk noise-induced hearing loss from sirens and back injuries from lifting patients. In addition, EMTs and paramedics may be exposed to diseases such as Hepatitis-B and AIDS, as well as violence from drug overdose victims or mentally unstable patients. The work is not only physically strenuous, but also stressful, involving life-or-death situations and suffering patients. Nonetheless, many people find the work exciting and challenging and enjoy the opportunity to help others.

Be it pledged as an Emergency Medical Technician, I will honor the physical
and judicial laws of God and man. I will follow that regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, nor shall I suggest any such counsel. Into whatever honors I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of only the sick and injured, never revealing what I see or hear in the lives of men unless required by law.
I shall also share my medical knowledge with those who may benefit from what
I have learned. I will serve unselfishly and continuously in order to help make a better world for all mankind.
While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life, and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times. Should I trespass or violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot. So help me God.

Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle equipped with not less than l lighted flashing, rotating, or oscillating lamp exhibiting a red or blue light visible under normal atmospheric condition from a distance of 500 feet to the front of the vehicle and when the driver is giving audible signal by siren, exhaust whistle, or bell: The driver of another vehicle shall yield the right of way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, clear of an intersection, and shall stop and remain in that position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when other wise directed by a police officer.

EMS DESERVES RESPECT AND GRATITUDE IT'S BEEN EARNED!
As of 2000, EMT’s and Paramedics held about 172,000 jobs. Most career EMT’s and Paramedics work in metropolitan areas. There are many more volunteer EMT’s and Paramedics, especially in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas. They volunteer for Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), or hospitals and may respond to only a few calls for service per month, or may answer the majority of calls, especially in smaller communities. EMT’s and Paramedics work closely with firefighters, who often are certified as EMT’s as well and act as first responders.
EMT’s and Paramedics employed by fire departments work about 50 hours a week. Those employed by hospitals frequently work between 45 and 60 hours a week, and those in private ambulance services, between 45 and 50 hours. Some of these workers, especially those in police and fire departments, are on call for extended periods. Because emergency services function 24 hours a day, EMT’s and Paramedics have irregular working hours that add to job stress.
Full and part-time paid EMT’s and Paramedics were employed in a number of industries. About 4 out of 10 worked in local and suburban transportation, as employees of private ambulance services. About 3 out of 10 worked in local government for fire departments, public ambulance services and EMS. Another 2 out 10 were found in hospitals, where they worked full time within the medical facility or responded to calls in ambulances or helicopters to transport critically ill or injured patients. The remainder worked in various other roles that also provide emergency services.

I am the PARAMEDIC, First to arrive at the scene, I respond to the cry for help of the sick and injured. I am Trained and Skilled in the Healing Arts. I fight to buy time for suffering humanity. My duty takes me to varied places, and challenges me in various ways.
I function anywhere at any time, even in small dark places, cannot deter me from rendering aid to those in need of my skill. I try to ease pain of the injured, and with gentle hands I've known the thrill of bringing a new life into the world.
On Return to base, I relinquish to others those whom I have salvaged from death, praying that the skills taught to another will be enough to complete the Rescue I began.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
Somewhere in the realm of society, located just between the security of sanity and the neurosis which precedes psychosis, there is a group of individuals whose training and actions often make the difference between life and death.
This is the group of men and women who make up what is known as Emergency Medical Services.
You will find this special group of individuals located in various positions in your cities readied to respond to the next possible disaster which could occur, may it be a car accident or heart attack, readied to respond to a school shooting or a downed plane, hindered only by the natural obstacles of daily traffic.
No other group of humanity can carry so many items in their pockets which are strategically located in optimal positions of the body. Perhaps you’ll find scissors, band aids, tape, chap stick, combs or essential lifesaving sustaining items, but one thing that is certain, the last paycheck has long since met its demise and will not be found within. If they did it for the money there would be none.
With an overwhelming desire to sustain the flame of life from the last flicker of a spark which is near spent, this special group of individuals cope on a daily basis with variables which few people could ever tolerate.
When things go right the public loves them, the newspapers ignore them and the many lives that have been lost fighting to save a stranger, may rate a article on page twelve, yet their efforts and daily life goes on.
Then the earth shaking bill arrives, which automatically turns the very patient they saved and their friends and family hear how terrible the 500.00 bill was, instead of the efforts that saved their life or a family members. As Emergency Medical Services does not generally receive tax dollars such as police and fire agencies.
These men and women who make up E.M.S. come from all walks of life, and rarely stand on common ground until they meet you as a result of violence, accidents, and medical emergencies on the streets, housing developments and office buildings then all seems to come together with you in need of their training, their lifesaving skills and their emotional support. E.M.S. personnel lean on each other for support and understanding in sharing horrible calls that cerate’s a flurry of emotions.
They are the people who for a moment at a time that you may need to trust with a life of yourself or loved ones.
They are the individuals who crawl into a twisted steel cage which once was a fine automobile, to search for signs of life amongst its occupants and treat them while fuel leaks endangering their own lives so that you may live .
They are the calm voice on the other end of the telephone when it seems as though your world is crashing around you and your family.
They are the individuals who are the last to win the respect of the public even after they ran in to towers that would collapse. Despite their advanced medical training and certification they are called “Ambulance Drivers.” They are the first to be brought to court for decisions and actions that were made on the spur of the moment in environment’s of absolute chaos and often cleared after thousands of dollars of defense money when their decisions are backed up as appropriate.
They are individuals who carry no weapons and are attacked frequently, yelled at and spat on, then criticized for defending themselves from assaults from distraught patients or drug addicts who have turned violent.
It makes you ponder what kind of dedication it must take to shoulder the responsibility of life and death decisions that must be made in split seconds, and not in a controlled environment most often in inclement weather and dangerous scenes such as Columbine high school were EMS came under fire, and the attacks on September 11, 2001, that injured 119 EMT’s and Paramedics and resulted in the loss of life of 13 EMT’s and Paramedics, which are a couple of examples faced by this group called EMS.
These are the men and women of Emergency Medical Services. They are not as you will learn through out this site. These men and women are not “Ambulance Drivers.”
